This information is for both coach and manager of each team to read through and understand. Our club also has a Coaching Co-ordinator to help and support you. Also refer to the appropriate Netball NSW Code of Behaviour Policy listed in our Rules page.
As team manager or coach, you will have to pass on information to parents in your team, so that all acknowledge their responsibility toward their child playing, the team coach, and the team manager.
What is the role of a coach?
- Be enthusiastic and have good sportsmanship qualities;
- Have the ability to work with children, encourage and not discourage children, and show rewards to all;
- Have a good knowledge of the rules of netball and be willing to learn and improve these skills;
- Attend training and Saturday games each week. Try to make the physical activity fun at training so that all keep interested;
- Encourage players to attend coaching clinics held in school holidays, enter the team into carnivals that are held for netta, Junior and Intermediate players.
The duties of a coach are to:
- Attend games on Saturdays with the girls as they are looking for guidance, but if you can not, then let the team know and the manager will be in charge.
- Be responsible for the players on the courts and at training. Make sure the girls go home with a parent or carer if this has been organised. Always stay with your girls until all have safely been collected, and never let a player stay at the courts alone.
- Make sure you have the “equipment bag” for each game and training session; this bag is supplied by the club. Checks that netballs are inflated, position patches are all there, as well as a first-aid kit, a timer with a spare battery, and a whistle for “just in case”. This is some of the equipment you will need and of course anything you may want to add. Ensure that all position patches are handed back after a game. At the end of season, this equipment bag needs to be cleaned of rubbish and returned to the club.
- Advise all players and parents :
- To be aware that Code of Conduct applies at all times with no excuses for bad behaviour, poor sportsmanship or sledging (this applies to both training and Saturday games);
- To acknowledge that the Umpire ALWAYS has the last say, and only a Coach or a Player can discuss any problems that may arise with the umpire; no PARENT gets involved. We expect our own Helensburgh umpires to be treated with respect and not abused, so Helensburgh netball Committee expect the same respect to any umpire that you may come across. If you find that something is not right, then there are the correct channels to go through.
- Please note: a player may approach an umpire to discuss any questions they may have about the game, but if this happens, probably in the older teams, then as a coach you should also discuss the same questions with the player involved.
- Should you have problems at Saturday games, the coach, team manager, or a responsible parent can go to the Duty Room and ask for assistance from the “red Ladies” of Illawarra, which are then to come to the game and court involved.
- Any coach, manager, or player who may have a problem can approach our Coach Co-ordinator/Mentor at any time, and always try to do this as soon as possible, so any action if necessary can be had.
Please, do not hesitate to ask any questions that you may have, and we will endeavour to help.
What is the role of a team manager?
The team manager is to:
- Assist the coach whenever necessary.
- Be able to attend each game as duties need to be carried out each week, i.e. to have a scorer and in the 8’s, 9’s, 10’s, 11’s and 12’s games, a time keeper is required. Once the game has ended, ensure that the score sheet goes back to the Duty Room, this is usually done by the winning team. Also check that the score sheet has all names correctly on it, with the correct age and grading, as well as correct team name.
- Pay one of the two umpires each week. The team manager has to collect the money from parents and ensure that the umpire is paid by half time. Payment in 2011 is $8 for Netta teams, $10 for Junior teams, $15 for Intermediate, Cadet and Senior teams. Money collection can be organised as suits you, i.e. weekly or a lump sum at beginning of first game.
- Be supportive to the players and parents as some may be new to netball and not know how things work. It is expected that all concerned be aware that training is for the purpose of learning and to enjoy, NOT to be disrespectful and mess around.
- managers are to organise themselves or a team parent to attend the monthly meetings held at the clubhouse. In these meetings, notes and information could be handed out that need to be passed along to teams.
- Should you have any queries or problems that may need assistance, please do not hesitate to seek help from someone on the committee. This needs to be done asap, NOT when the season ends.
